In 1994, we decided to combine our passion and experience of the restaurant industry to introduce the wonders of Indian cuisine to Iceland. We set out with a simple and brilliant concept: combining fresh and exotic Indian spices, the best natural Icelandic ingredients, authentic preparation, all to be served by friendly professionals in a comfortable ambiance, every single time - without exception.
The challenges awaiting us far exceeded what was anticipated. The hurdles to overcome ranged from the direct import of spices to acquiring work permits for the team put together in India. With persistence, an abundance of enthusiasm and endless determination to not make any compromises, we eventually managed to bring over our first chef from South India.
The reputation of the restaurant grew by word of mouth and it was not long before media critics began to pay attention to this exotic newcomer. The arrival of authentic Indian cuisine for the first time in Iceland was celebrated with raving reviews.
Austur-Indiafjelagid has gone on to enjoy exceptional success and recognition. We have been frequented by numerous dignitaries and international celebrities who have praised us in the international press. However, we owe our success to all the dedicated locals who continue to love our food, atmosphere and service, visiting us again and again.
The spring of 2014 saw a new chapter begin in the story of Austur -Indiafjelagid. The restaurant underwent complete refurbishment and expanded to meet its ever-growing popularity, further cementing its position as a landmark in Reykjavík’s culinary landscape.
