In 1994, we, Gunnar and Chandrika Gunnarsson decided to combine our passion and experience of the restaurant industry, to introduce the wonders of Indian cuisine to Iceland. We set out with a simple yet brilliant concept: Combining the fresh and exotic Indian spices with the best natural Icelandic ingredients in authentic preparations, to be served by friendly professionals in a comfortable ambiance. Every time!
The challenges that awaited us far exceeded what was anticipated. The hurdles ranged from direct import of spices to acquiring work permits for the team that we had put together in India. With a lot of persistence and with the determination to not make any compromises, we were eventually permitted to bring our first chef from South India.
The business grew by word of mouth and it was not long until the media critics began to pay attention to this exotic newcomer. With raving reviews the media celebrated the arrival of authentic Indian cuisine for the first time in Iceland.
Fast and accurately it became a local favorite and has since been synonymous with great authentic Indian food in Iceland. Austur India has gone on to enjoy exceptional success and recognition. We have been frequented by numerous dignitaries and International celebrities, some of whom have even praised us in public. However, we owe our success to all the dedicated locals who continue to love our food and service, visiting us again and again.
